Department of Critical Care (DCC)
The Department of Critical Care (DCC) at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital is located on the 1st floor of the Tower Block. It looks after patients who need more care than can be given on general wards (High Dependency and Intensive Care).
DCC has ten beds, including four single rooms to help to control infection.
What to Expect When You are Admitted to Our Ward
Several different machines (including ventilators, monitors and pumps) are used in DCC to help care for patients. They can seem a little frightening at first, but staff will try to put you at ease and explain what the machines do and the noises they make.
Many patients need sedation and pain-killing drugs to help keep them settled and comfortable whilst in DCC. These may make you drowsy but DCC staff will continue to tell you what is happening and explain treatment to your family to keep them informed.
As your condition changes you may be moved to different bed areas within DCC.
How to Contact the Ward
You and your family will be informed of the best time to telephone for news. It is a great help to us if just one person telephones for information and they then pass details on to other family and friends.
