Cheltenham Aveta birth centre: temporarily closed

11 Jan 2022, 4 p.m.

To allow us to maintain safe staffing levels across our maternity services, the Aveta Birth centre at Cheltenham General Hospital has been temporarily closed.

This difficult decision has been made in response to increased demand for maternity services combined with staffing challenges including colleagues having to isolate due to COVID-19 and general staff sickness.

Update at 11.1.22: the Aveta birth centre will now remain closed throughout January and this decision will be reviewed after the end of the month.

To enable us to continue to provide choice for families, our two other midwifery-led birth centres at Stroud Maternity and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital remain open and our home birth service continues. In addition, the main delivery suite in the Women’s Centre at Gloucestershire Royal is also available.

This is temporary, but planned move allows us to be confident that safe, compassionate care will be provided for pregnant women and families in Gloucestershire in the coming weeks.

Antenatal appointments in Cheltenham continue as normal. This is a temporary measure and we look forward to re-opening Aveta as soon as it is safe to do so.
