Our estate covers nearly 200,000 square metres across Cheltenham General Hospital, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Stroud Maternity Unit.

Our 720-strong team are responsible for developing, maintaining and operating those facilities to support the needs of our staff, patients and visitors.


Catering services at Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospitals provide an average of 1,500 patient meals every day, and 750 meals for staff and visitor.


At our cafes and restaurants, we offer great food at great value for patient, visitors and staff.

Our menus are carefully designed by our experienced chefs and we use quality ingredients. We offer a wide range of food options and a selection of hot and cold beverages, served by friendly staff.

The restaurants are signposted at each hospital site, and we also have vending machines available.

Domestic services

Cleanliness in hospitals is about more than just keeping the place clean.

Working 24 hours a day, every day of the year, our domestic services team provides cleaning services for every area throughout both of our hospital sites. This includes public areas and offices, through to the cleaning of our operating theatres and ward areas.

Estates services

Our estates service addresses the conditions of our buildings, which includes:

  • interior finishes
  • plant
  • equipment
  • grounds maintenance

We also ensure the health and safety of Trust staff, contractors, patients and visitors by complying with all statutory and mandatory local rules and guidelines, and regulations and codes applicable to Trust premises and facilities.

Linen services

We ensure that every ward, clinic and theatre has enough clean sheets, bedding and scrubs to provide the best service to our patients.

We also manage the curtain function at both hospitals, ensuring that curtains are changed regularly and as required by the nursing staff.

Materials management

Materials management officers at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals are an integral part of ward and department NHS Supply Chain stock replenishment.

Medical engineering

Medical engineering provides services which assist in the safe use and effective management of medical equipment.

The department also manages the electrical safety testing of portable non-medical appliances. This ensures the safety of staff, patients and visitors when using our appliances, along with those brought into our hospitals by patients.


Our portering service operates a 24 hour, 7 day a week service. Our core functions are the transportation of patients and goods around our hospitals.

The vast majority of our work is patient related (both inpatients and outpatients). However, our porters also play a crucial role in other services, acting as the ground safety team for the air ambulance, and being part of the fire team to provide access control.

Sterile services

The sterile services departments are based at both Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals.

Using specialised processes, we can reproduce around 25,500 instrument sets per month across both hospitals.

We manage reusable medical devices for internal and external customers and are compliant to a quality management system ISO 13485:2012, which is the foundation of our working environment and is pivotal to demonstrate compliance. It also confirms our commitment to providing an excellent service.
