Dr Smith qualified from the Medical College of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 1985. She obtained specialist recognition in Rheumatology in 1997. She has a comprehensive knowledge and experience in the management of all rheumatic diseases.

She is the educational supervisor for the Rheumatology Registrar Trainees for the Trust.  She is a mentor for the Trust.

She is a member of the Joint Speciality Committee for Rheumatology at the Royal College of Physicians in London.

Dr Smith works as a medical volunteer on a regular basis. Examples of this include her attachment with Asha for which she carries out general medical and rheumatology clinics amongst the slum dwellings in Delhi, India, and she is a tutor for PRIME; recent trips to Bosnia and the Middle East. She worked as a general physician and rheumatologist in Dubbo, in rural NSW, Australia (1999-2000).

She has an area of particular interest in the management of infectious diseases and musculoskeletal disorders.

She also carries out clinical research. Her most recent project examined serum cytokine profiles and signs and symptoms in Rheumatoid Arthritis (linked with the academic Rheumatology department at Bristol University).

Dr Smith is the lead for the transitional services for rheumatology. She has established a dedicated annual clinic for the transitioning of adolescent patients from the paediatric to rheumatology service. She has instigated training in carrying out ultrasound scanning of finger joints to look for signs of an early inflammatory arthritis (EIA) and has now began scanning patients specifically in her EIA clinic to look for signs of inflammatory arthritis, therefore reducing the waiting time for a diagnosis and treatment of EIA.

Dr Smith is also the rheumatology lead for audit.
