A window beyond the ward: How Virtual Reality is helping patients to ‘escape’ during their hospital stays.

Places to Escape Thanks to your support, charity-funded headsets are bringing comfort and connection to patients through the power of virtual reality.
Places to Escape

Spending extended periods of time in hospital can be challenging for both patients and their loved ones. Sometimes patients feel that they have lost a sense of independence and the freedom to explore the world on their own terms, which can impact their mood and overall wellbeing.

Our Patient Experience Team in collaboration with the Trust’s Simulation and Digital Learning Technologies Teams have launched the ‘Places to Escape’ project. This new trial uses the power of Virtual Reality to enhance patient wellbeing, lift spirits and make the time at our hospitals a more positive experience. It is currently available to patients in Oncology and the Department of Critical Care across both Gloucestershire Hospitals.

The immersive 360-degree videos shown on the headsets were filmed across stunning locations and landmarks in Gloucestershire; from Puzzlewood to Gloucester Cathedral, Bristol Zoo to Gloucester Rugby. It enables patients to revisit cherished places, explore new destinations or simply find solace in familiar surroundings, all from their hospital beds.

“There was something soothing, embracing and calming. That moment of not being in the ward, that moment of being somewhere you want to be. It was a really rewarding experience.”

Thanks to your kind donations, the charity has funded three new Virtual Reality headsets to support this incredible project. If you would like to learn more about Places to Escape, you can view a promotional video at our Trust Website.
