Bright Shapes and Big Smiles: Charity-Funded Artwork Brings Joy to Battledown Ward
Children visiting the Children’s Outpatients Department at Cheltenham General Hospital are now welcomed by a burst of colour and creativity, thanks to new charity-funded artwork designed to make hospital visits a little brighter!
Visual artist Alice Humphries was commissioned to transform the space; her work blends bold colours and playful shapes to create imaginative worlds that help viewers reconnect with their sense of wonder.
Before finalising the artwork, our Art Co-ordinator Anoushka Duroe-Richards worked closely with clinicians to ensure that the designs were supportive, inclusive and suitable for a wide range of sensory needs. The new designs for Battledown Ward centre on shape, colour and geometry, offering a calming yet engaging backdrop for young patients and their families. Four clinic rooms now also feature ‘spot the difference’ artwork to help as a distraction during appointments.
"I really like the cartoony abstract pictures and figures - they are very bright and colourful. I loved looking at all the different shapes and sizes before my appointment. I would give the new pictures 10 out of 10!”
Seven-year-old Immy, one of the first patients to see the finished artwork, shared her excitement
These joyful additions to Battledown Ward were made possible thanks to the generous charitable support from Daisychain Benevolent Fund Trust.
Richard Smith, Director of Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity said; “We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of Daisychain. Their donations have helped to transform spaces in our hospitals which will make a real difference every day. It has helped create a welcoming space that soothes anxiety, sparks curiosity and make hospital visits that little bit easier for children and their families.”
