How our Focus funded Occupational Therapist is making a difference for local cancer patients
Thanks to your donations, the charity has funded a new role within the Oncology Outpatients - a frailty occupational therapist to provide patients living with frailty additional personalised support, treatment and care.
In the UK, 60% of people diagnosed with cancer are over the age of sixty and this can impact the complexity of their care. Adults living with frailty can experience a number of physical and psychological effects during their treatment. Georgina Moss, our charity funded Occupational Therapist, specialises in assessing, monitoring and caring for cancer patients with frailty, helping to support them when they need it most.
“As part of my new role, I work with patients to help them maintain their independence and quality of life during their treatment. We discuss what is most important to them to be able to do in their daily lives in an environment where they feel the most comfortable; this could be over the telephone, at home or even during one of their clinical visits. My role helps me improve the patient experience through the timely issue of equipment to their home, specialist care and access to ongoing collaborative services.”
“By offering emotional and practical support through therapy provision, we also hope to alleviate some of the effects of cancer treatment. The specialist occupational therapy interventions aim to help to improve a patient’s resilience and reduce hospital admissions by providing proactive interventions. For any patients who do need to be admitted, their length of stay is also reduced thanks to these provisions.”
