Advanced Practitioners: supporting your care

15 May 2026, 4:49 p.m.

Advanced Practitioners in our Trust play a vital role in providing care and keeping our patients safe. They are an important part of our multidisciplinary teams working across a wide range of services.

We are aware that recent national discussion about Advanced Practitioners may feel concerning or confusing for some patients. We understand why this might raise questions and we want to reassure you.

An Advanced Practitioner is an experienced healthcare professional who has developed additional training and skills to assess, diagnose, treat and manage patients. They often work independently within agreed clinical guidelines and work closely with doctors and the wider clinical team.

In our Trust, Advanced Practitioners include experienced professionals such as Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Radiographers and other Allied Health Professionals. They are a valued part of our teams and play a key role in supporting patient care across many of our services.

Advanced practice is not a separate profession. It is a recognised level of practice that experienced healthcare professionals develop over time through additional training, education and experience. Advanced Practitioners remain accountable to their professional registration and always work within their agreed scope of practice.

Advanced Practitioners are part of well established clinical teams. They work alongside doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals and, where needed, have access to senior support and escalation. Their role is to help improve access to care, support continuity, and contribute to safe and effective treatment.

Patient safety remains our highest priority. All staff are expected to work within their competence, follow clear clinical standards, and seek advice or support when needed. We also encourage an open culture where concerns can be raised and discussed appropriately.

We are very grateful for the care and professionalism shown by all of our staff every day, including our Advanced Practitioners. We remain committed to providing safe, compassionate care and ensuring that every patient is treated by the right professional at the right time.
