Pathology: Information for Patients
Our lab staff perform tests on tissues and fluids to help with diagnosis and treatment. Our pathology staff also provide blood tests at our hospitals and in the community.
The department is open 24 hours a day all year round and below is a summary of the type of work covered by the department.
Chemical Pathology (Biochemistry)

The Haematology and Blood Transfusion department provides a comprehensive high quality screening and advisory service to Cheltenham General Hospital, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and to GP surgeries in Gloucestershire and parts of Worcestershire.
The histology department is based on the Cheltenham General Hospital site with a hotlab for frozen sections on the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site. The department is accredited to ISO 15189:2012. Accreditation is limited to those activities described on our UKAS schedule of accreditation found at UKAS.com. Our UKAS reference number is 9577.
The majority of our immunology tests are performed in-house, but a number are sent to specialist reference centres. A clinical immunology service is also provided for patients with primary immune deficiencies and allergies.
The department offers a comprehensive service for bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology and virology

Pathology Stores at both sites hold a wide range of disposable goods and chemicals used by each of the departments within the building. It also supplies the appropriate specimen containers, bags, forms and equipment needed for sample testing.
Work experience and laboratory tours
The Pathology laboratories are usaually able to offer a limited number of work experience placements each year.

This information is aimed at healthcare professionals who are using our pathology services.
The Molecular Pathology department, based within the Cellular Pathology Department at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT), provides access to a comprehensive selection of specialist molecular pathology and genomic testing on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens.
The progress of a disease can be monitored by pathology tests to determine the effectiveness of treatment and to assist clinical management decisions. The Clinical Pathology Laboratories are equipped to a high standard and provide a comprehensive range of clinical services on both the Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital sites. The laboratories are regularly inspected and accredited by the relevant national bodies.
All of our laboratories are Institute of Biomedical Science-approved training laboratories.
