Attending the Mobile Cancer Care Unit for SACT (chemotherapy) treatments

12 Feb 2026, 3:43 p.m.

Patients receiving Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) treatment for cancer are sometimes asked to attend the Mobile Cancer Care Unit (MCCU) instead of Avening Ward at Cheltenham General Hospital.

This decision is made based on several factors, including where you live and the level of clinical oversight required for your specific treatment. It also helps us manage capacity across our services, ensuring patients receive care in the most timely and appropriate setting.

The MCCU is a purpose-built mobile unit that provides cancer treatment closer to people’s homes. It is supported by the national cancer charity, Hope for Tomorrow.

Being directed to the MCCU does not mean there is any difference in the quality of care you receive. The unit delivers the same high standard of specialist cancer care provided by the Trust's team of experienced oncology nursing teams in a setting designed specifically to support people undergoing cancer treatment.

“The same nurses rotate from working on the wards. They are doing the same job, but the atmosphere on the unit is just so much more relaxed."

Many patients find there are practical advantages to attending the MCCU.

  • Parking is often easier and less stressful, while drop-off or pick-up arrangements can be more convenient for carers, family members and transport services.
  • The environment is calm and welcoming, often with shorter walking distances from where you are dropped off, which can be particularly helpful if you are feeling unwell or tired after treatment.

If you have any concerns or questions about where your appointments will take place, please speak with your oncology nurse or treatment team. They will be happy to explain the reasons for your appointment location and ensure you feel fully supported and informed about your care.
