Double transplant recipient talks to students about the lifesaving gift of organ donation

23 Mar 2026, 3 p.m.

Adrian Heeley, double transplant recipient, Ian Mean, chair of the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Organ Donation Committee, and Marcin Pachucki, Clinical Lead for Organ Donation, were invited to talk to Year 10 students at Balcarras School, Cheltenham.

This is the third year that the Organ Donation Committee have presented to students at Balcarras School. 150 students listened to Adrian’s story from dialysis to a kidney and pancreas transplant and his success in the British Transplant Games.

There are currently over 8,000 people waiting for a transplant across the United Kingdom and one person dies every day because they did not get the transplant they so badly needed.

Amy Searle, Year 10 tutor said:

“On Thursday afternoon the Year 10 students attended an insightful PSHE session on organ donation led by a team of 3 experts from the NHS and Gloucestershire Organ Donation Committee. The session covered statistics about organ donation in Gloucestershire, the process of organ donation and the story of Adrian who has received a lifesaving kidney transplant. The session was engaging, thought-provoking and very well received by both staff and students alike.”

Adrienne Niblett, Associate Assistant Head said:

“Please can you pass on from me a big thank you. Raising awareness around such a vital situation is hugely important and I have heard many positive comments from the pupils after the session.”

This year, 17 volunteers have joined the Trust to help engage with our local communities - particularly to help raise the profile of organ and tissue donation with schools and at events.
