New Critical Care unit for Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

14 Jan 2026, 2:52 p.m.

A project is underway to develop a new four-storey Critical Care Unit on the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital site.

The unit will be located between Tower Block and Gallery Wing with construction planned over the next three years.

The project will deliver:

  • A modern, purpose-built Critical Care facility
  • An improved environment and more efficient layout for patients and staff
  • Upgraded infrastructure and systems, delivered while maintaining services

Once complete, the unit will initially provide 24 Critical Care beds, with built-in flexibility to expand to 36 beds as demand increases.

The key benefits are:

  • Increased capacity and flexibility to manage surges in demand
  • Improved compliance, safety and departmental flow
  • Better patient and staff wellbeing, with fewer transfers, re-admissions and out-of-hours discharges

To enable construction to begin, site preparation works are being planned and may result in some minor disruption. We recognise that building works can have an impact, so all activity will be carefully planned, clearly communicated and actively managed to minimise any impact on services and staff.

As per the current arrangements, our Department of Critical Care (DCC) operates across both our hospitals and it is not envisioned that the new building will change this operating model.
