New patient messaging service helps loved ones stay in touch

Being in hospital can mean missing out on time with family and friends, particularly during religious festivals, birthdays and other occasions that would normally be shared with loved ones.

A new patient messaging service at Gloucestershire Hospitals is making it easier for people to let patients know they’re thinking of them, even when they can’t be there in person.

Friends, family members, colleagues and others can email a short message, which is printed and delivered by hand to the patient on their ward. It could be a greeting to celebrate a religious festival, a birthday or anniversary message or simply a few words to let someone know they’re in your thoughts.

For patients who are unable to have visitors, or who are spending a significant occasion in hospital, hearing from someone they know can make a real difference to their day.

Head of Patient Experience Katherine Holland said: “Being in hospital can be difficult at any time, but it can feel particularly lonely when you’re missing a birthday, a family celebration or a religious festival."

Messages are kept brief and reviewed before being printed and delivered to patients on the ward.

The service is available throughout the year, giving people a way to send their good wishes for a special occasion or simply let someone know they’re thinking of them.

"Receiving a message from someone who’s thinking of you can be a real boost. It’s a simple way for people to show they care, even when they can’t be there in person."
