Small Fire at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, 4 November 2025
This morning, just before 8am, a small fire occurred on the 8th Floor of the Tower Block at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. The fire was quickly contained and there is no ongoing risk.
The Trust has declared a Business Continuity Incident (BCI) to help with recovery and patient flow across the hospital and wider system, given the disruption.
The incident was caused by a battery unit powering a mobile computer that malfunctioned. Our teams responded immediately and followed established safety procedures to manage the situation.
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service attended promptly, confirmed the area was safe and praised the professionalism and care shown by our staff and colleagues from Gloucestershire Managed Services (GMS).
As a precaution, some patients were moved to other wards in line with our fire safety plans. Relatives of those patients are being contacted directly. We apologise to patients and relatives for any disruption caused by these temporary moves.
No patients were harmed. A number of our staff were treated for smoke inhalation and continue to be monitored in our Emergency Department.
The affected ward is undergoing a deep clean and enhanced ventilation and will remain closed until it is safe to reopen.
Chief Operating Officer Al Sheward said, “In addition to our gratitude to the Fire Service, we would like to offer sincere thanks to all our colleagues for their prompt and coordinated response. Their unwavering focus on patient safety and mutual support truly made a difference. Their efforts were exceptional.”
Our hospitals are very busy today, please call 111 for urgent care advice
