If your GP arranges for you to be seen by our Frailty team, they will usually ask for you to come to our Frailty SDEC (Same Day Emergency Care) at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

The nursing staff will welcome you before one of our nurse practitioners or doctors comes to see you.

Our team are trained to perform Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA). This is a multidisciplinary assessment to fully understand your health and wellbeing. The CGA considers your medical, mental, functional, and social needs to create a personalised care and support plan, with the aim of enabling you to achieve your goals.

Please arrange your own transport but let our team know if you have any issues.

Where is the Frailty SDEC?

The Frailty SDEC is located alongside our Frailty Assessment Unit on the ground floor of Gallery Wing at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Our hospital maps show the location of all our buildings.

  • There is external access to both our Frailty SDEC and assessment unit with a drop-off area located just across from the pedestrian exit of the multi-storey car park by the disabled parking bays.

What do I need to bring?

Depending on what investigations and/or treatments are required, you may be with us for most of the day. Sandwiches and drinks will be provided during your time on our unit but do come prepared with anything you might want or need for the day.

Please remember to bring:

  • A list of your current medications and any medications you will need to take
  • Any recent or relevant medical paperwork
  • A walking aid if you use one regularly
  • A ReSPECT form if you have one
  • Comfortable clothing and supportive shoes or slippers

We encourage you to bring a partner, relative, carer or friend with you if possible.

What happens if I need to stay in hospital?

We will try to get you home the same day but if there are investigations or treatments that are needed more urgently or home isn’t an option, we may arrange for you to be transferred to a bed on our Frailty Assessment Unit.

Please note the Frailty Assessment Unit is a short-stay unit of up to 72 hours. If you require further care, treatment or assessment beyond this time, you may be transferred to one of the Care of the Elderly wards at either Gloucestershire Royal Hospital or Cheltenham General Hospital to ensure you receive the most appropriate support.
