- Needles MUST be removed from syringes before transport
- Syringes must be capped and labelled with patient details
- These are urgent samples - contact the laboratory to ensure sample are processed immediately on receipt
- Fungal culture is performed on request

- Endophthalmitis
- Recent surgery
- Presence of foreign bodies
- Recent, current and intended antibiotics
Storage/transport
Transport to laboratory immediately. Ensure minimal delay.
Turnaround time
Microscopy on day of receipt
Culture 5 - 7 days
