Microbiology

  • New positive hospital cases will be notified by the Infection Control team
  • The following sites can be screened:
    • groin and axilla
    • urine
    • nose and throat
    • perineal
    • rectal or stool
  • Other sites that may be considered if clinically indicated are:
    • low vaginal swab
    • sputum/endotracheal secretions
    • drain fluid (abdominal/pelvic/mediastinal)
    • cannula entry sites
    • wounds

Sample requirements

Standard charcoal transport swab (hyperlink)

30mL sterile universal for urine (hyperlink) or other fluids/secretions

Urine samples sent in red capped 30mL sterile universal (hyperlink) containers are also accepted.

Required information

  • Reason for screening e.g., previous colonisation, contact with colonised patient or transfer from another hospital/unit in the UK or abroad

Storage/transport

Store and transport at room temperature

2 – 5 days
