The Surgical Admissions Suite cares for patients who are having elective (planned) surgery and who are expected to stay in hospital overnight or longer. The unit is located in the main corridor from the Tower entrance, and is situated above the Pharmacy department. There is a lift to the right hand side of the stairway.
Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) is a toxin produced by a small number of Staphylococcus aureus strains (1-2%). These may be meticillin susceptible (MSSA) or MRSA strains.

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BOHB, also known as 3- hydroxybutyrate) is a ketone body produced when glucose cannot be used as a fuel source. It is measured in conjunction with free fatty acids (FFA) and glucose in order to investigate hypoglycaemia or symptoms associated with ketoacidosis. The ratio of FFA to BOHB in hypoglycaemia can help to detect hyperinsulinism or a fatty oxidation defect.
