Update on our A&E Live Waiting Times
Our live A&E waits page is currently suspended. A recent IT incident meant the page was showing incorrect information. We have taken this opportunity to pause and review the way we capture and share information about our Emergency Departments (EDs) and wider urgent care services.
Our aim
Our aim is to provide clear, accurate, and up-to-date information so that people can make informed choices when seeking urgent or emergency healthcare. However, there are wider options beyond visiting our EDs or an MIIU and it's important to reflect this.
When operational, our live waits page displays:
- The average waiting time for treatment, based on patients seen in the last four hours.
- The number of patients currently waiting at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital Emergency Departments.
Background
When first launched in 2012, the A&E live waits page also included comparisons with Minor Injury and Illness Units (MIIUs) across the county. Following IT system changes beyond our control, this wider comparison was no longer possible, but we have continued to display waiting times for our two Emergency Departments.
Improving urgent and emergency care information
Across Gloucestershire, there are many services available for illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening, including:
- NHS 111 telephone and online 111.nhs.uk – for advice, guidance, and referral to the right service.
- Community Pharmacies – for advice and treatment of many common minor ailments.
- GP practices – for ongoing or non-urgent health concerns.
- Minor Injury and Illness Units (MIIUs) – for a wide range of injuries and urgent conditions that do not require an Emergency Department.
- Out of Hours Services and the Gloucester Health Access Centre (01452 336290).
- Emergency Departments (A&Es) – for the most serious and life-threatening cases only.
What we’re working on
As part of our improvements, we are:
- Ensuring that the data reflected in our Live Waits provides an accurate picture
- Developing clearer online resources, including a map of Minor Injury Units with opening times, so people can quickly see what services are available near them.
We hope to have our Live Waiting times back up and running soon.
