Continuity of Carer is a key recommendation of NHS England’s Better Births report and aims to make maternity care more personalised and safe.

About Continuity of Carer

Continuity of Carer means that designated teams of midwives will care for women at all stages of their pregnancy, birth and beyond. We currently have 3 Continuity of Carer teams across the county.

Evidence shows that when people have a midwife they are familiar with in labour, they are less likely to require interventions during pregnancy and birth, and are more likely to be satisfied with their care.

Many midwives feel that the Continuity of Carer approach better supports a holistic approach to care throughout the whole transition from pregnancy to parenthood. This can create a more positive experience for both parents and midwives.

Appointments

Your Continuity of Carer team can carry out appointments at a time to suit you, which will include evenings and weekends. These can be:

  • at your local children’s centre
  • at your nearest surgery or hospital
  • at your home

All routine appointments will stay the same, along with any additional appointments if you need them.

Contact your Continuity of Carer team

For any non urgent queries, you can email your Continuity of Carer team, using their dedicated email address. You should include:

  • a short message, explaining your reason for getting in touch
  • your full name
  • your hospital number (MRN)
  • a contact phone number

A midwife should be in contact within 24 hours. Alternatively, you can call your midwife using the number on the front of your pregnancy notes.
