• The optimal tests for diagnosis of viral encephalitis are PCR tests on a CSF sample
• This serology screen comprises the following tests:
  • Influenza A virus antibodies
  • Influenza B virus antibodies
  • Mumps antibodies
  • Measles antibodies
  • Herpes simplex antibodies
  • Enterovirus IgM antibodies
  • Herpes varicella-zoster (VZ) antibodies

Sample requirements

Serum - paired samples not normally required

8.5ml of blood taken into a plain gel tube

• Relevant clinical details
• Date of onset

Storage/transport

Store at fridge temperature

Transport as soon as possible at ambient temperature

Turnaround time

• 10 - 14 days
• Enterovirus IgM sent to a National Reference Centre
