Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) is a rare but often life threatening complication of blood transfusion, characterised by the engraftment and proliferation of donor T lymphocytes in the recipient. This occurs when the recipient's immune system fails to reject transfused lymphocytes, leading to widespread immune-mediated tissue damage.

Post-transfusion purpura (PTP) is a delayed adverse reaction to a blood or platelet transfusion that occurs when the body has produced antibodies to the donor transfused platelet antigens. These antibodies destroy the patient's platelets leading to a rapid decline in platelet count. PTP usually presents 5–12 days after transfusion.
