This might mean that you have a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a pulmonary embolism (PE) or both. Your doctor has prescribed apixaban. This is a type of medication known as a direct-acting oral anticoagulant (or DOAC). Apixaban is a blood thinning medication given to treat VTE and help prevent another clot from forming.
