My mother did a lot of voluntary work for the Red Cross and I grew up admiring what she was doing. This inspired me from a young age to want to help sick and injured people.

Education

Diploma in Adult Nursing 2004 (UWE); BSc Specialist Practice 2009 (UWE).

Career path

I was a Band 5 nurse in Main Theatres Recovery from 2005 and was promoted to Band 6 in September 2021

What was your first job?

Staff Nurse, Main Theatres Recovery

Why this Specialty?

I love surgery. I guess it`s what you get used to. After doing a placement in recovery as a nursing student in 2003, I enjoyed it so much that I asked if they would take me on after my training. Luckily for me (or them), they did! I have never looked back since and I cannot imagine doing anything else.

Can you outline your path to promotion?

I was unsuccessful in my first interview for a Band 6 management post. When another post for a Band 6 came up, I worked on the feedback that I was given from the first interview and did a lot of research, as well as shadowing in-charge shifts to help me get the job. I have also done other Band 6 interviews for specialist posts that have been unsuccessful but I learn from them and never give up.

What obstacles have you faced and overcome?

I was my own biggest obstacle. For a very long time, I resisted being in management because I assumed that there was a lot of stress that comes with being a manager and I just wanted to come into work, do my job and go home.

Do you have any tips for interviews or career progression?

Preparation is everything, if you are lucky enough to be shortlisted for a job don`t waste that opportunity, do your research prepare, prepare and prepare. Do not be afraid to apply for any job that you want, the sky is the limit. The worst that can happen is they will say no but at least you will have tried and given it your best shot.

What qualities are essential in your position?

Being very organised, with good decision-making, negotiating and communication skills, as well as kindness and listening.

Three words to sum me up

Compassionate, Versatile and Approachable

I was holding back on applying for Band 6 jobs then a few people who were junior to me were being promoted, which inspired me to do the same. I thought if they are doing it why can’t I? and that is when I started to push myself to overcome this obstacle.
