We want our staff, patients, and communities to be proud of the Trust, and for our hospitals to be recognised as places where people can receive consistently high-quality care.

Over the past few months, we have listened to nearly 1,500 staff through more than 55 workshops, supported by over 20 trained facilitators.

We also worked closely with key partners, including Gloucestershire Managed Services (GMS), our Trust Charity, Governors, One Gloucestershire, Inclusion Gloucestershire, Healthwatch, and the VCSE Alliance.

Across all six districts, we ran a series of community engagement events. More than 560 local people shared their views through surveys, focus groups, structured interviews, and large-scale discussions.

Our engagement confirmed that while we have strong foundations, our current vision and values no longer fully reflect who we are, or who we aspire to be as we look to the future.

Staff and patients told us they want a Trust that:

  • It is even more patient- and staff-focused
  • It is deeply rooted in and reflective of our communities
  • Lives its values, not just states them

We are now working to refresh and evolve our vision, mission, and values to better represent our purpose and identity.

This work is about much more than words — it’s about embedding our values into the lived experience and culture across the Trust, so that everyone who works with and depends on us can feel it every day.

Together, we are shaping a future we can all be proud of.

Purpose and Vision

Staff, patients, partners and communities reflected that the purpose and vision are not always met consistently and do not reflect the lived experience of many staff and patients and should be more grounded.

Our Purpose: To improve the health, wellbeing and experience of the people we serve by delivering outstanding care every day.

Our Vision: Best Care for Everyone

We heard from the feedback that the purpose did not reflect our role in delivering good care, that is consistent, compassionate and puts the patient at the centre of everything we do.

We are exploring some potential options that reflect the feedback and these may include:

  • We believe good care is delivered with compassion, pride and respect.
  • To be a compassionate, inclusive and safe place to work and receive care.
  • To be an inclusive, and supportive place where staff and patients thrive, driven by innovation and continuous learning.

What should be included in our Values?

Feedback from stakeholders was particularly focused on our ‘Excelling’ and ‘Listening’ values, and highlighted similar themes around delivering ‘outstanding’ care and providing the ‘best care for everyone’.

It was clear that, while these aspirations are important, the lived experience of staff and patients often falls short, meaning these values need to be reviewed and strengthened.

Our current values are:

  • Caring: We care for our patients and colleagues by showing respect and compassion.
  • Listening: We actively listen to better meet the needs of our patients and colleagues.
  • Excelling: We strive to excel through learning and expect everyone to do and be their best.

What values do you want to be explored?

Options we're considering:

  • We are Caring
  • We are Compassionate
  • We are Inclusive
  • We are Curious

What are the behaviours we would expect to see which demonstrate living our values?

Behaviours play a crucial role in how we live our values. They are the bridge to ensure that values are not merely aspirational but are reflected in the day-to-day actions of every member of staff, in everything we do.

As part of the co-design of the strategy, we are asking people for their views on the behaviours that should underpin the values.

Tell us what behaviours you would expect if we were truly to live our values.
