The Multi Speciality Research Team (MSRT) supports clinicians in our Trust in delivering research studies across most settings and has supported up to 20 different specialist areas.

Our Team

MSRT work alongside medical staff, nurses, AHP’s, clinical scientists, paramedics and community-based teams to provide the resources necessary to deliver clinical trials and research studies. They support research patient pathways from hyper-acute care and emergency treatments through to long-term rehabilitation and follow-up.

What we do

Our team of specialist staff can coordinate the whole study process, from patient identification, recruitment and treatment, to follow-up care. Registered nurses and study coordinators make up the majority of this team and they work alongside data and administration staff to deliver high-quality patient care in both in-patient and out-patient settings. We have the skills to administer a wide variety of trial interventions and investigational medicinal products including oral preparations, vaccines, infusions and wound care. Although senior team members will lead in speciality areas, most staff within the team work across multiple disease areas to support the growing interests of clinicians in our Trust.

Where we work

Our team works across the Gloucester and Cheltenham hospital sites. We have research offices in the Orchard Centre and the Women and Children’s centre at Gloucestershire Royal, where we support Trust clinical services including trauma and orthopaedics, emergency care, critical care, paediatrics, respiratory and renal services, amongst many others. We also have office space at Cheltenham General Hospital to support those specialties based on the Cheltenham site, including stroke services, hepatology, and our ongoing commitment to Oxford Clinical Trials Unit to deliver large scale cardiovascular research. We have a charity-funded stroke research nurse post based here which provides the additional input necessary for this group of patients and offers opportunities for the many stroke survivors in our region to take part in research at our Trust.

Vaccines Research

MSRT works closely with the West of England local Clinical Research Network and study sponsors to deliver focused support, including our successful regional vaccines research model. MSRT staff based in Gloucester deliver adult vaccine studies for both Covid and non-covid research, as well as paediatric vaccine research. The regional working model helps to coordinate and network staff working on the same projects across multiple healthcare organisations and brings new research opportunities to our Trust. The MSRT workforce delivers these complex large scale studies at a fast pace and provide the necessary skill set to overcome the challenges of providing this service in a District General Hospital. We work closely with our colleagues in pharmacy and pathology in particular to provide the quality and safety necessary for successful vaccine study delivery.

Opportunities

MSRT is a rapidly growing team. Most staff in the team are registered nurses who are needed to administer medicines and treatments but we do offer multidisciplinary posts when possible. We have a wealth of clinical and non-clinical experience and we support and develop staff outside of our team by offering practical research skills support, as well as opportunities for shadowing, bank work, secondments and student nurse placements.

We would be happy to talk to you or your team about our work.
