Our medical training for doctors is run by our Gloucestershire Academy, one of seven academies and NHS trusts that provide placements for the University of Bristol.

About us

The University of Bristol Medical Deans in Gloucestershire are Dr Philip Davies and Dr Susannah Jenkin. Our Undergraduate Medical Education Manager is Angie Coulson. The University of Bristol Undergraduate Offices are located in Redwood Education Centre on the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital campus. Take a look at a full list of contacts.

All units of the curriculum are delivered in part or in total and all parts of the Primary Care Service, the Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Hospitals Trust and the Gloucestershire 2Gether Trust is used in doing so. Every unit of the curriculum is led locally by a unit co-ordinators and the unit is delivered through unit tutors and a body of teachers, both doctors and other professionals, relevant to that unit. The unit co-ordinators link with the unit leads at the University and the unit co-ordinators from the other six academies. Hence the provision of education for student doctors by the University of Bristol in Gloucestershire is designed to be consistent with what is envisaged centrally and what is delivered within the other 6 academies.

As well as delivering the curriculum, the clinicians in Gloucestershire also participate in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) finals examination at Bristol and the Yr3&Yr4 OSCE’s held at Sandford Education Centre, Cheltenham in June & July each year. They also examine the Objective Structured Long case Examination Record for Yr4’s in Gloucester.

FAQs

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are staying in any of our accommodation in Gloucester you will need to bring cooking utensils, pots & pans, duvet, pillows, bed linen and towels with you as they are not provided. A personal crockery pack will be provided containing crockery and cutlery. Our accommodation in Cheltenham is fully furnished including crockery, cutlery & utensils, microwave, iron, kettle, vacuum cleaner etc. All rooms in Cheltenham are provided with one set of bed linen, and laundry change weekly.

Can I bring my car?

Please note there is no parking for medical students at our accommodation in Gloucester. You will therefore need to find on road parking for unloading purposes on arrival at the accommodation or apply for resident parking (these are limited and details will be contained in your key packs on arrival). The Trust parking permits are being reviewed as part of an overhaul of the system and we will be in touch as soon as we have more details. We are exploring temporary solutions in the interim.

Where do I collect my keys from and return them to when I leave?

Instructions for key collections will be included in your welcome emails/reporting instructions. On your departure Gloucester accommodation keys must be left in the Student Digs Gloucestershire key return box located in each property entrance/stairwell (N.B. Not the individual flat post box, also found in the property entrance). Keys for accommodation in Cheltenham can be collected from A&E reception at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) on the day of your arrival (please see welcome email/reporting instructions for detail). They must be left in the returned keys letter box located outside the front door of your accommodation OR in person to A&E reception CGH by 8.30am on the day you vacate the accommodation in order for us to prepare for new student arrivals. N.B. Posting your accommodation keys to us after you have left Gloucestershire is not acceptable and will result in a charge.

What if I do not require accommodation?

Please let us know ASAP if you will not be needing accommodation whilst on placement with Gloucestershire Academy. We have to let our accommodation providers know in advance of your arrival and if they prepare a room for you and you don't arrive we are charged a fee, which we pass on to the student.
