Organ and tissue donation is when you decide to give an organ or tissue to save or transform the life of someone else. You can donate some organs and tissue while you are alive, and this is called living organ and tissue donation. However, most organ and tissue donations come from people who have died.

Pathology Stores at both sites hold a wide range of disposable goods and chemicals used by each of the departments within the building. It also supplies the appropriate specimen containers, bags, forms and equipment needed for sample testing.

A Fibro Scanner is a type of ultrasound that is used to assess liver fibrosis in a non-invasive way. The equipment can help to provide a prompt diagnosis, which is especially important as 90% of liver disease is reversible if detected early. This also enables the hepatology team to organise a treatment plan as soon as possible for patients. The Fibroscan procedure is quick and painless, and can also help in emergency situations by providing accurate readings of liver damage in less than 15 minutes.

The Plasma Viscosity, alongside the ESR and C-Reactive Protein tests, gives a measure of the acute phase response; i.e. the increase in assorted plasma proteins and fibrinogen in blood plasma stimulated by a variety of causes (e.g. infection, neoplasm or inflammatory disease). The value of these tests is limited by lack of specificity. Their main use is as an objective guide to the underlying activity of certain chronic inflammatory diseases such as temporal arteritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
