When you have recovered from the anaesthetic you will be taken back to the ward. At first you will feel drowsy and may need to sleep.
Dietary advice will be available from the ward before you are discharged.
If you are having treatment in either of the outpatient departments (Avening Ward or in the Edward Jenner Unit), your medicines will usually be sent directly
If you are an inpatient, the ward nurses will look after your line.
Once you recover from the procedure, you will be taken back to the ward.
After the operation you will be transferred to the recovery area and then to the ward.
On arrival at the ward
When you arrive at the ward, please let the receptionist know that you are there.

You should then return to the Surgical Assessment Unit on Ward 5b at 7:30am for the operation.
In contrast, when you’re in an unfamiliar environment like a clinical ward, you may be more likely to fall because you don’t have those familiar things
While on the ward you will be shown how to perform deep suctioning to clear secretions.
We work in both inpatient and outpatient settings, you may see a kidney dietitian if you are admitted to the renal ward, attend a renal outpatient clinic
You will go back to the ward after a short stay in the recovery area, as soon as we are happy that your condition is stable.
However, we are unable to guarantee this and your accommodation will depend on the clinical needs of all the patients on the ward during your admission

Removal of the tracheostomy tube can be done on the ward, sedation or anaesthetic will not be needed.
You will normally wake up in the operating theatres recovery area, but you may not remember much until you are back on the ward.
