AMU provides rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with urgent medical conditions who require inpatient admission.
The Acute Medical Unit is a 50 bedded unit, which aims to assess and either discharge or transfer patients to a more specialised area.
Following your stay in AMU, you may be:
- admitted to a specialist ward
- transferred for further care elsewhere
- discharged home
The team responsible for your care while you’re on AMU will be able to discuss this with you.

Location
The Acute Medical Unit is based on the first floor, the best way to access the ward is from the Atrium entrance and to take the lift or stairs to the first floor.
Mealtimes
You will be given a choice from a daily menu for all of our freshly prepared meals.
Ward staff will be able to advise you of meal times, as they may vary from ward to ward.
