Alstone Ward specialises in treating patients who are having planned orthopaedic surgery and is located in College Road Wing at Cheltenham General Hospital.
Our aim is to ensure that all patients receive high quality care from staff experienced in orthopaedics. Most patients are admitted to our ward after they have had planned surgery. Patients who have had hip or knee replacements usually stay on the ward for five days, before going home.
Getting up and about as soon as possible is an important part of rehabilitation and patients are usually encouraged to wear their own day clothes as much as possible.
Alstone Ward is located in the College Road Wing on the 3rd floor at Cheltenham General Hospital.

Please note: Smoking is not permitted in any building or within the grounds of any of our sites. Information and support is available to any patients who wish to stop smoking. Nicotine Replacement Therapy is available to help reduce your cravings during your stay.
Free Wifi is available on all our wards. If you have any difficulty accessing this, please speak to a member of ward staff.
What to expect when you are admitted
Patients are admitted to Alstone Ward after their operation, unless they are admitted to the ward the previous evening.
Patients who are having hip and knee replacements normally stay on the ward for five days, prior to going home. Our patients are encouraged and supported to get up and about as soon as possible after their operation, to help their rehabilitation.
Mealtimes and catering
With the exception of breakfast all meals are served from a hot trolley. You will be given a choice from a daily menu for all meals.
- Breakfast: 8am
- Lunch: 12.30pm
- Supper: 6pm
Drinks are served throughout the day.
The catering staff are an integral part of the meal delivery service at Cheltenham General Hospital. The staff are visible on the ward throughout most of the day, serving food, washing up and cleaning in the ward pantry as well as delivering stock. The catering staff are easily recognised by their uniform; royal blue polo shirts, navy blue baseball caps and trousers.
There are two restaurants at Cheltenham General. The Blue Spa Café is located at the front of the hospital in the Centre Block. The Glass House Café can be found in St. Paul's Wing. Read more about food and drink in our hospitals
When you arrive on the ward your nurse will advise you how long we expect your stay in hospital will be. We hope you have already made some plans and preparations for your discharge and how you will manage when returning home. Please note that we are unable to provide hospital transport to take you home.
Before you are discharged from hospital you may receive all or some of the following:
- an outpatient’s appointment
- a practice nurse appointment
- medication and aids from the physiotherapist and occupational therapist.
