Ward 6A specialises in treating stroke patients. It is located on the sixth floor of the Tower Block at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
Patients come to Ward 6A for specialist care following a stroke. This part of our stroke unit focuses on the rehabilitation phase of stroke care and Ward 6B specialises in the acute phase. Research has shown that stroke patients treated on a stroke unit do better than those treated on normal medical wards. Patients are more likely to survive the stroke, have fewer disabilities and be able to live independently if treated on a stroke unit. The ward can be contacted on 0300 422 6975 and 0300 422 8965.
Patients who have had strokes are treated by a multidisciplinary team which specialises in stroke care. The core team consists of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dietitians, therapy assistants, psychologists and social workers.

Mealtimes and catering
You will be given a choice from a daily menu for all our freshly prepared meals. Ward staff will advise you of the meal times, which may vary slightly from ward to ward.

When you arrive on the ward your nurse will advise you approximately how long your stay in hospital will be. We hope you have already made some plans and preparations for your discharge and how you will manage when returning home. We are unable to provide hospital transport to take you home and this is another consideration to be made prior to admission.
Discharge planning starts as soon as you are admitted as we like to know your social circumstances and give you a proposed date for discharge. A more definite date is normally given 24 hours before your discharge. For your discharge to go ahead, the team looking after you will ensure that you are fit and ready. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask one of the nursing team.
