Your pre-operative assessment is an opportunity to discuss the risks and benefits of surgery, identify any medical conditions and improve them before your operation.
This assessment is important to ensure it’s safe to proceed with your surgery. If you do not attend your pre-operative assessment, your surgery may be delayed or cancelled.
Your pre-operative assessment
A pre-operative is an essential requirement for anyone having surgery. Your assessment may involve a simple phone call, but most people need to attend a clinic appointment.
Your assessment allows us to check your fitness for surgery, and carry out any investigations needed, like blood tests.
We need to make sure you are in the best condition to proceed with your surgery safely, and to recover quickly without complications. It's also an opportunity for you to discuss the risks and benefits of having your operation.
You cannot have your surgery until you have had a pre-operative assessment. If you cannot attend your pre-operative assessment, please call us on 0300 422 4913 to reschedule your appointment.
Lifestyle changes
Many of the risks associated with surgery can be reduced by simple lifestyle changes, like:
- quitting smoking
- reducing how much alcohol you drink
- increasing physical activity
- losing weight
Free support with any of these lifestyle changes are available on the Healthy Lifestyles Gloucestershire website.
